Matthew
15:21-28
“From
there Jesus took a trip to Tyre and Sidon. They had hardly arrived when a
Canaanite woman came down from the hills and pleaded, "Mercy, Master, Son
of David! My daughter is cruelly afflicted by an evil spirit." Jesus
ignored her. The disciples came and complained, "Now she's bothering us.
Would you please take care of her? She's driving us crazy." Jesus refused,
telling them, "I've got my hands full dealing with the lost sheep of
Israel." Then the woman came back to Jesus, went to her knees, and begged.
"Master, help me.”He said, "It's not
right to take bread out of children's mouths and throw it to dogs." She
was quick: "You're right, Master, but beggar dogs do get scraps from the
master's table." Jesus gave in. "Oh, woman, your faith is something
else. What you want is what you get!" Right then her daughter became well.”
The first
thing I thought when I first read this passage is HA! If that was me, Jesus
probably would’ve been scratched out of my book :X. Knowing me and my temper
and my pride, I would no longer want His help. Granted, if my daughter was sick
I might be a little desperate, but man! It’s tough when you go to someone for
help and they compare you to a dog! But look at how humble this woman was! Not
only that but she had enough faith to know that Jesus could heal her daughter.
Sometimes, we need to show this level of faith and persistence as Christians.
Don’t harden your heart against God just because He doesn’t reply as you would
like. Rather, humble yourself, have faith, and continue to make your demands
known to Jesus. I’m sure He’ll be faithful to you like He was to the lady in
this story :-)
